In the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, we maintain low student-to-faculty ratios and teach all our courses with faculty (not graduate students). All lectures and laboratories are held in smart classrooms where audiovisual presentations and demonstrations are used as teaching tools.
We are committed to providing the best educational experience for our undergraduates. We are continually trying new methods of teaching including incorporating the latest technology. The university's investment in modern facilities has played a major role in our department's academic success. The Dorothy Westerman Herrmann Natural Science Center opened in 2002 and contains high-quality laboratories and equipment that promote learning and research.
Dedicated faculty members are another reason our department is thriving. In addition to teaching a wide range of programs, they provide opportunities for undergraduates to participate in
undergraduate research projects.
Our graduates have accepted positions at numerous firms in the area (Procter & Gamble, Patheon, and ADM) and received MD, PharmD and DVM degrees from the universities of Cincinnati, Indiana, Kentucky and Louisville, among others. In addition, our graduates have gone on to receive Ph.D.'s in chemistry or biochemistry at some of the most prestigious schools in the country, including Harvard, Illinois-Urbana, Indiana, Johns Hopkins, MIT, UNC-Chapel Hill, Ohio State, Vanderbilt, Oregon State, UC-Irvine, Northwestern and Yale.
