Student Highlights Spring 2025

PAD 622 Volunteer and Community Engagement

The NKU MPA program is all about experiential learning! This semester, our Volunteer & Community Engagement class (PAD 622) partnered with the Northern Kentucky Area Development District (NKADD) on service learning and student philanthropy.

Students worked on service-learning projects related to board governance, board engagement, public information/strategic communications, and community profiles. The class met multiple times with our community partners, including a visit to the NKADD headquarters in Florence.

In addition, the students developed a priority ranking of the service-learning projects and awarded a $2,000 grant to NKADD for implementation of some project ideas. Again, we thank the NKU Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement, the Manuel D. & Rhoda Mayerson Foundation, and Engage KY for their support.

Sam Shelton

In December 2024, MPA student Sam Shelton earned his master's degree, which involved completing a capstone project in collaboration with the Emancipation Heritage Center (EHC). MPA alumnus Sam Shelton "came back" to present his project to the board of this emerging nonprofit organization in Augusta, KY.听 听

Sam's project provided information and ideas for potential grants that could help fund efforts to restore St. Paul鈥檚 African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and transform it into an African-American cultural arts center and museum. His report and presentation were excellent!

Amara Kinney and Ben Kelly

The new year brought some exciting opportunities for NKU MPA students and alums (see a full list at the end of the newsletter)! Amara Kinney and Ben Kelly both earned their MPA degrees in December 2024 and were selected for positions in the City of Cincinnati that started in January 2025. 听

As a student in the MPA program, Amara became more interested in working in local government, particularly the City of Cincinnati. For her capstone project in Fall 2024, she collaborated with Angie Wright (2019), Chief of Staff in the City Manager's Office, and Brooke Lipscomb, Manager of Place Based Initiatives. Amara developed a report on the city's efforts related to homeless encampment outreach, which included key performance indicators, past achievements, and
recommendations for process improvements.听听

When Ben started the MPA program, he was serving as Policy and Communications Director in the Office of Councilmember Victoria Parks. He recently started as Chief of Staff in the Office of Councilmember Jeff Cramerding, who is Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee. Among other things, Ben looks forward to helping create the most effective budget possible and supporting growth in the city. For his capstone project in Fall 2024, Ben gathered and analyzed extensive data on Cincinnati City Council elections from 1957 through 2023, including the number of candidates, demographic composition, neighborhood representation, and political parties.

Shayla Stewart

Shayla Stewart (MPA student) joined the American Institute of Dental Public Health as an Education and Leadership Specialist. Congrats, Shayla! 听

MPA students have various backgrounds and experiences in fields from both the public and private sectors. Shayla was the first Dental Hygienist to enroll in the program! In her new role, Shayla will be developing program infrastructure, coordinating resources, and supporting program implementation on dental health with a focus on veterans, LGBTQIA+, and rural communities and people living with disabilities.听

We want to thank MPA听 Advisory Board members Dave Moore (2006), Founder of Africa Fire Mission, and Rolonda Smith (2005), Talent Acquisition & Engagement Manager at Cincinnati Public Schools (both seated in this photo). Once again, Dave and Rolonda led听the interviewing session in our Capstone class this semester. Both shared interesting experiences and great advice during this positive and fun workshop.
